Premier Metro Division

The Wave is Sumner Rugby Club’s premier men’s team, competing in Christchurch’s Premier Metro Division.

Since their promotion to the top tier in 2010, The Wave has become known for their dynamic, attacking style of rugby that’s as thrilling to watch as it is to play. At the heart of The Wave’s ethos is a commitment to building a club culture where players are valued not just for their on-field performance, but for their contribution to the team and wider community.

The team fosters a positive, inclusive environment that supports player development and camaraderie. With a focus on fast-paced, expansive rugby, The Wave continues to push boundaries and set high standards in Canterbury club rugby.

Premier Reserve Division

The Tsunami is Sumner Rugby Club’s Premier Reserve team, competing in Christchurch’s Division 2. Proudly known as the proving ground for Sumner’s top talent, this team carries a rich legacy in Canterbury club rugby.

It was here that current All Blacks coach, Scott “Razor” Robertson , first laid the foundation for his coaching career and the culture he helped build at Sumner. Back then, the team - then called The Wave - earned a fearsome reputation for rock-solid defence and legendary off-field spirit. After a string of undefeated seasons, they were promoted to Division 1 and went on to form the core of today’s Premier Men’s side.

Now rebranded as The Tsunami, the team is focused on rising once again—bringing back the energy, the unity, and the competitive edge that defines Sumner rugby.

Colts Division

The Sumner Storm is the club’s Premier Colts team and a key part of the senior player development pathway. With back-to-back championships in 2020 and 2021, the Storm has proven itself as a powerhouse in the Colts Division.

More than just a winning side, the Storm is where emerging talent is nurtured—developing the next generation of players who progress into the Tsunami and Wave teams. Many of our senior players began their journey here, and the team plays a vital role in keeping the club’s culture strong.

The Storm lives out our “Sumner for Life” spirit, inspiring junior players to return home, pull on the jersey again, and continue their rugby journey where it all began.
