The Wave are Sumner Rugby’s premier side, known for their skill, resilience, and the strong sense of community that defines the club.

Their best-ever round robin finish came in 2018, placing 3rd, which also saw them qualify for the Top 6 before the competition format later changed to a Top 8. This season marked a defining chapter in the team’s journey, showcasing their ability to compete with the best in Canterbury club rugby, this being highlighted when the Wave then went on in 2024 with the new format to have their best-ever finish making the preliminary Semi Final.

The Wave are also known for their international roots, with players from across the globe coming to Sumner to experience the club’s unique culture and seaside spirit - including talent from England, Ireland, Italy, Scotland, Spain, Chile, France, Fiji, Tonga, Samoa, Cook Islands, Canada, USA.

Every season, the Wave compete in the Battle of the Beaches against New Brighton - a fiercely contested game that draws big crowds and showcases incredible spirit and rivalry.

With strong community ties, the team also participates in the ANZAC game, donning custom shirts to pay respects to our ANZACs, and Ladies Day, auctioning off all tops for an important cause, with proceeds supporting breast cancer research.

The Wave continue to set the standard for excellence within the club, combining high-level rugby with deep-rooted community engagement.
